Alistair Bell (1913-1997) was born in Darlington, England but moved to Vancouver in 1929, where he enrolled in the Vancouver School of Art. Bell mastered the techniques of drypoint, etching, wood engraving and wood cutting. He received two Senior Art Fellowships from the Canada Council, enabling him to travel extensively and devote himself to his art full time. Bell’s work is dominated by images of boats, birds and other animals, emphasizing the rhythmic quality of their shape. He participated in several international exhibitions and is represented in many public and private collections. The collection of prints held within the Burnaby Art Gallery’s permanent collection has been designated as Canadian cultural property: works of special historical and cultural significance.
