Chick Rice was born in Macao, China in 1954. Rice graduated from Emily Carr in photography, received her BFA at the University of British Columbia, with advanced studies at the Banff Centre of the Arts, and film direction at the National Film Board's Studio D, Montreal. Rice uses simple cameras to capture her intuitive emotional response to the subject whether it is the landscape around her or the portraits she is known for. She is the 1994 VIVA award recipient for visual art and her work has been collected by the VAG, Canadian Contemporary Museum for Photography, Morris and Helen Belkin Gallery, and the Canada Council Art Bank. She has taught in the photography and communication design faculties at Emily Carr University since 1991 and was recently awarded The 2012 Ian Wallace Award for Teaching Excellence. Rice continues to live and work in Vancouver, BC.
