Betty Jean was born in Trochu, Alberta in 1920. She graduated with honours from the Ontario College of Art where she studied painting and commercial art. She furthered her studies in painting at the Artists’ Workshop in Toronto with R. York Wilson, Cleeve Horne and A.Y. Jackson (of the Group of Seven); Doon, Ontario with Jock Macdonald; and in San Miguel de Allende with James Pinto. She exhibited in many juried shows across Canada over many years. Betty Jean moved to Vancouver in 1962, working as a commercial artist while she continued to paint. She took time off work in 1967 to study printmaking with Ian McIntosh at the Vancouver School of Art (now ECUAD). By 1970 she was working full time as a printmaker. Betty Jean remained a dedicated printmaker at Dundarave Print Workshop from 1979 until she died in 2004.
