Margaret Shelton was born in Bruce, Alberta, in 1915. She was educated in Calgary, studying under H.G. Glyde and Walter J. Phillips. Her contributions to the development of printmaking in Canada are significant, having created hundreds of prints in her career. She exhibited with the Society of Canadian Painter-Etchers and Engravers (CPE), the Canadian Society of Graphic Art (CSGA) and the Calgary Sketch Club. Although primarily an Alberta artist, she also traveled in British Columbia and created a number of important prints of the province. Shelton died in Calgary in 1984.
