The Spirit of Edmonds relief sculpture, installed along the outside wall of Tommy Douglas Library, celebrates aspect of the Edmonds neighbourhood by depicting historical images and events. Landmarks which are presented in the design include the former Burnaby Municipal Hall (built at Kingsway and Edmonds in 1911 and demolished in 1973), the CUPE Memorial Water Fountain, and the “Burnaby Welcomes You” sign. Prominent NDP politician Tommy Douglas, for whom the building site is named, is also depicted. A unique sculptural method was implemented using panels were sculpted in clay from which molds were taken. A final set of panels, fabricated in concrete, was cast from the molds. The artwork was completed by Donald Luxton & Associates: Todd Brisbin (Art Direction, Concept & Development), Christopher North (Concept Drawing), Steve Cassidy Francis-Arduh (Sculptor), Ital Décor Ltd. (Fabrication), and Shield Masonry Ltd. (Installation).
