In October, 2004, the Korean Veterans Association of Canada and the City of Burnaby began discussing the installation of a Korean War Memorial at Central Park. The initiative by the 60,000 strong Korean-Canadian Community based in Burnaby raised nearly one million dollars. The monument, unveiled in July 2007, involves three components: a memorial, a statue—Ambassador of Peace—and a wall of plaques to recognize the 36 servicemen from British Columbia who made the supreme sacrifice during the Korean War (1950-1953) and the peacekeeping period (1953-1956). The Korean War Memorial was donated to the City of Burnaby by the Korean Veterans Association of Canada in 2007.
