Lead Pencil Studio is a collaboration Annie Han and Daniel Mihalyo. The team designed Old Column using welded steel wire filigree. Measuring 40 inches wide by 22 inches deep, the work is 24 feet tall. The intended effect is to see it as a 3D-dimensional sketch of a tree becoming in the process of becoming a section of lumber. Inspired by Burnaby’s recent past of thickly forested landscape, the artists intend the work to recall nearby Douglas Fir trees located in Central Park. The blackened stainless steel wire sculpture resembles a ‘drawing-in-space’ and captures a hybrid relationship to the natural world and what is hewn from it to provide shelter.
