Barbara Steinman was born in Montreal, QC in 1950. She began her career working in video art and expanded to include permanent, large-scale outdoor commissions, neon, photography and installations. H often explores the theme of collective and personal memory as a site of sensible recollection, reconfiguration and distortion. A recipient of the Governor General’s Visual and Media Arts Award in 2002, Steinman’s multidisciplinary works have been shown in numerous exhibitions in Canada and abroad, including the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid, the Art Institute of Chicago as well as the Seoul Metropolitan Museum of Art. Steinman continues to live and work in Montreal, QC.
