Gift of Yvonne Lammerich
Labeled a "degenerative" artist by the Third Reich at the age of 21 in 1933, Lammerich fought in the German army as a foot soldier, until he was badly wounded. Following the war, he was commissioned to renovate the interior of St. Laurentius Church in Braunschweig, a job he gained through the recommendation of a friend, who was a priest. However, faced with limited artistic opportunities, Lammerich and his family moved to Canada in 1959 in order to take up a teaching position at the University of Toronto. After retiring from the University in 1980, he returned to painting, holding his last exhibition at the Burnaby Art Gallery in 2005, when he was 93.
