Teen BC by Nate Woodbury is one of three artworks installed in the north concourse of the Academic Quadrangle at Simon Fraser University that stemmed from the efforts of SFU student groups who protested the installation of a mural by Charles Comfort entitled British Columbia Pageant, 1951, as well as paintings by John Innes. Panel discussions, lectures and performances, called the Cedar Table Series, were convened by students between September 2004 and February 2005. As part of the effort, a contest for Anti-Colonial Art was undertaken and this work was selected to be placed on display in the Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology. The rough-hewn mask is adorned with salvaged wood, bullets and a rail tie and painted with a minimal formline design. The back of the mask has been collaged with photographs of faces and intercut with cars, effectively preventing the mask from being worn. This work is part of the Simon Fraser University Art Collection. The SFU Art Collection contains over 5,800 works. Approximately 1,000 works of art are shown throughout the campus and integrated in public, administrative and common learning spaces. A selection of the most accessible in this diverse repository are incorporated into the City of Burnaby Public Art Registry.
