Inspired by anecdotal stories found in the Burnaby Archives about the area’s transition from forest to orchard, artist Devon Knowles applied the Sierpinski mathematical formula to make visible fractal patterns found in nature. Using unit pavers of dark and light grey, Knowles re-creates the formula as an abstraction of nature. Rising from this ground plane are a series of cylinders of different heights that in their random placement and variation of girth, could be considered abstractions of trees. These cylinders are capped with thick coloured glass that when lit from within, emanate a soft glow at night, while in the day, function as light wells providing daylight to the parking garage below. Knowles also worked with landscape architect Robert Barnes from Perry + Associates to apporoximate and restore the area’s past green-scape.
Devon Knowles is a Canadian artist currently based in Vancouver, British Columbia. Her material centered practice assesses historical and contemporary models of production, interrogating their cultural positions and how they form material language. Through the investigation of a material’s history, economic and social contexts, the philosophy and theory surrounding a material manifest themselves in language. This language establishes an intimacy directly between the physical material, its use, and history. It is from within this blended configuration where Knowles’ practice engages, and where the conscious act of making becomes conceptually productive.
