Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) commissioned Geert Maas to sculpt a “Legacy Monument.” His sculpture is dedicated to victims of impaired driving and to educating the public about the dangers of impaired driving. In 2010, the Burnaby Parks Commission unanimously agreed to accept the artwork as a donation. The circular stainless steel with bronze relief sculpture was placed in Central Park along the rebuilt path. The steel circle represents a giant wheel, while the bronze relief represents a steering wheel. Four cut-out silhouettes symbolize the four people killed in Canada each day, on average, by drunk drivers. Artist’s Statement: “I first looked into what MADD stands for – they support victims of drunk driving. I thought to make it a circle – people behind the wheel, those killed by four wheels. Four people a day have died due to drunk driving. So I took four faces out of the stainless steel circle – people that are missing and then added enlarged bronze medallions, the kind I’ve made for years, into the front.”
Geert Mass (1944-present) was born in The Netherlands, where he attended Academies of Art in The Hague. Mass moved to Kelowna, British Columbia with his family in 1979. With his wife Elly, Mass created the Geert Mass Sculpture Gardens and Gallery which features one of the largest collections of bronze sculptures in Canada and a diverse selection of other works. Geert Mass is an internationally renowned artist who works in two and three dimensions in a variety of media. His disciplines include sculpture, painting, reliefs, and medallic art. His works have been shown in numerous exhibitions and are represented in prestigious public, corporate, and private art collections worldwide.
