The City of Burnaby's Community Arts Development Program facilitated a mosaic project involving the Cameron Seniors Garden Club, community members and students from 3 of the surrounding school. Members from the Garden Club provided presentations on environmental elements of Cameron Park alongside artists who taught mosaic and composition techniques. A workshop was also held at Cameron Centre where 60 patrons took part in learning mosaic techniques while creating additional mosaics to be embedded in the designed seating area of the park. 19 dragonfly mosaics were designed and made by students and community members. 13 of them are located in the new seating area adjacent to the dragon eco sculpture while the other 6 are in the teen area and the picnic table areas. The purpose of this project was to involve community in a project that celebrates Cameron Park and gives patrons a sense of ownership of the area. Community Arts Coordinator, Shelley Twist wanted to create conversation between senior’s and youth and to create a meeting place where future intergenerational conversations can be held. Members of the Seniors Garden Club were also giving the opportunity to work with Burnaby’s Community Arts and Parks Department in creating the final design for the seating area which features the dragonfly mosaics and a planter for them to design the landscape of.
