An SFU Millennium Project, Oval Reflections is an interactive sculpture located in the Academic Quadrangle. It invites observers to enter the oval, where a carved interior allows one to sit opposite a reflective mirror on the counter-facing half. Etched into the mirror are the phrases “Discovery, Diversity and Dialogue” and “Bold Initiatives, Innovation, and Risk Taking”. Within the oval, one may sit, contemplate, and reflect.
Carlos Basanta (1944-present) has focused a large measure of his creative effort on Public Art. Adding a sense of beauty, interest and culture to the places where people live, work and relax is very important to him. It also provides Basanta with a unique opportunity to communicate his artistic vision to a broad audience. The unique nature of a site and its function are a source of inspiration to him. Basanta approaches the site with respect for its character and tries to discover its possibilities and to bring out its qualities. Basanta has worked with various mediums with intention of creating bold designs that can surprise, delight or challenge the viewer.
