Immutable Affection is a 4m tall corten steel honeycomb type structure curving up into the sky. Starting at the base the honeycomb voids are filled with cast GFRC textured panels in a reddish brown colour with gold centers on the northwest side and hexagonal flat pieces on the south west side. The upper portion of the steel sculpture show the view through the honeycombs. Immutable Affection alludes to molecular structures and honeycombs/bees as symbols of community & interconnection as the piece slowly expands upwards into the sky - connecting earth and sky. The curving nature evokes the underside of a ship as it moves through water, speaking at progress, development. Stylized barnacles slowly populating the structure to the northwest and stylized mushroom gills to the southeast. Connecting water and land. Mushrooms connecting their mycelium networks, brains to communicate and connect. Barnacles are a beautiful symbol, in their duality for humanity. Their larvae provide food for salmon, they are filter feeders which keep our waters clean and yet they totally annoy boaters. So finding that balance is where the sweet spot is. With patience and time, when we pay attention to the details, pearls of wisdom or nuggets of gold emerge and community thrives. Immutable Affection is a landmark for the new residents that encourages connection between nature, the new community as it grows and connects and the ever changing city beyond.
