The Guerrilla Girls are an anonymous group of feminist artists based in New York. They founded their group in 1985 in response to an exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art titled, “An International Survey of Recent Painting and Sculpture” in which only 13 of 169 artists were female. They’ve since become advocates against discrimination of women and minorities in the art world. Remaining anonymous behind gorilla masks, the Guerrilla Girls organize protests and create posters, stickers, billboards and prints. They give public talks on the unfair conditions of working women artists and artists of colour, and also publish books relating to statistical data.
