Based between Toronto and New York, Brendan Fernandes earned his MFA (2005) from the University of Western Ontario and his BFA (2002) from York University in Toronto. He also completed the Independent Study Program of the Whitney Museum of American Art in 2007. Fernandes’ practice includes painting, sculpture, performance, sound installation and printmaking. Born in Kenya of Indian decent, his work investigates the concept of ‘authenticity’ as an ideological construct created and exploited by different cultures, both dominant and subordinate.
