Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) commissioned Geert Maas to sculpt a “Legacy Monument.” His sculpture is dedicated to victims of impaired driving and to educating the public about the dangers of impaired driving. In 2010, the Burnaby Parks Commission unanimously agreed to accept the artwork as a donation. The circular stainless steel with bronze relief sculpture was placed in Central Park along the rebuilt path. The steel circle represents a giant wheel, while the bronze relief represents a steering wheel. Four cut-out silhouettes symbolize the four people killed in Canada each day, on average, by drunk drivers. Artist’s Statement: “I first looked into what MADD stands for – they support victims of drunk driving. I thought to make it a circle – people behind the wheel, those killed by four wheels. Four people a day have died due to drunk driving. So I took four faces out of the stainless steel circle – people that are missing and then added enlarged bronze medallions, the kind I’ve made for years, into the front.”
