Elisapee Ishulutaq was born in 1925 in a seasonal hunting camp nearPangnirtung, on Baffin Island (Nunavut). Ishulutaq was raised in a community that was very self sufficient, relying on traditional hunting methods and spirituality. Ishulutaq became more involved in drawing and printmaking during the 1960s period, when she began to explore drawing as a mode by which to record the old ways of life, as well as the present realities facing her community. She is a 2014 recipient of the Order of Canada for her artistic and cultural contributions.
