In 2006, the foreshore and upland walk from Barnet Marine Park to Hastings Street was dedicated to former mayor Douglas P. Drummond (1996-2002). As a marker for the walk and a monument in Drummond’s honour, Burnaby Parks and Recreation commissioned a public artwork to compliment the dedication. On a concrete base, a commemorative plaque states that this was Drummond’s favourite place to walk or run. Three poles of varying heights surround the plaque, each the perch for a life-sized steel sculpture bird. Sandra Bilawich, known in Burnaby for her eco-sculptures, designed permanent steel sculptures of a raven, bald eagle, and cormorant to convey the environs of Drummond’s walk.
