William Thomson was born in 1947 in Vancouver, British Columbia. He earned a Diploma in Forestry at the British Columbia Institute of Technology in 1970 and a Bachelor of Arts in Geography at Simon Fraser University in 1975. He went on to study art at the Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design, in the Part-Time Studies Diploma Program from 1984-1993. Thomson has worked in a wide range of media including assemblage sculpture, collage, woodcut prints, mail art, and drawing. He has been involved in and has coordinated art projects related to the social, political, and economic concerns of communities and is, in addition, Director of AVENUE for the ARTS SOCIETY, a non-profit cultural organization in Vancouver, and the Canadian representative of COMAV (World Council of Visual Artists) based in Mexico City. He has exhibited works in Canada, Italy, Mexico, and the United States.
