Commissioned by the City of Burnaby and the City of New Westminster, the Sports Mural was built to raise funds for the 1973 Jeux du Canada Games. The mural, designed by Vancouver-based competition winner Ken Rainford, was intended to be a base for a separately-commissioned sculpture—a "sports plaza"—which was never installed. It is undetermined whether a time capsule is buried underneath the mural. The time capsule supposedly identifies the donors, each of whom paid $1 "for a little immortality": a mosaic tile.
