North Face is a large welded steel sculpture installed in the courtyard of the West Mall Centre. Born in Surrey, England, Peter Hide undertook studies at Crodon College of Art and St Martin's School of Art, where he was a pupil of Anthony Caro, before relocating to Edmonton, Alberta to teach at the University of Alberta. Working in the modernist tradition of welding scrap steel, his works are distinguished by their emphasis on weight, mass and monumental vertical form. This work is part of the Simon Fraser University Art Collection. The SFU Art Collection contains over 5,800 works. Approximately 1,000 works of art are shown throughout the campus and integrated in public, administrative and common learning spaces. A selection of the most accessible in this diverse repository are incorporated into the City of Burnaby Public Art Registry.
